Almost everyone who gets into fly fishing hears the same advice: get a 9' 5-weight. There's a reason that advice never dies — it's the most versatile trout setup there is. Nine feet gives you reach and accuracy across the widest range of water. A 5-weight throws dry flies, nymph rigs, and small streamers, and still has the backbone to handle a surprisingly big fish. And a medium-fast action is forgiving — it loads easily, so it's the action you actually want to learn on.
That's the Fly Flinger. Not a compromise rod or a "beginner toy" you'll replace after a season — a legitimate, do-everything trout rod, priced so the cost of getting started doesn't stop you.
This isn't the same Fly Flinger we launched with. We upgraded the blank — it's more accurate, with higher torsional stability, which is a technical way of saying it tracks straighter and lands where you aim. We moved it to VFC green with an anti-glare matte finish so sun off the water won't give you away. We're not satisfied with "good enough" on the rod most people learn on. The whole point of the Fly Flinger is to put a real tool in a new angler's hands — one that helps them get better instead of fighting them.

The Fly Flinger Pro

Nine feet, 5-weight, fast action. The Fly Flinger Pro does everything the Fly Flinger does — dry flies, nymphs, small streamers, all-around trout — but with more line speed, a lighter blank, and upgraded components. It's the rod you reach for when your casting has sharpened up and you want a tool that keeps pace.
The faster action generates higher line speed, which means more accuracy, more distance, and real performance in the wind — the situations where a slower rod starts to struggle. (Higher line speed throws a tighter loop, and a tighter loop is what puts the fly on target and cuts through a breeze.) The blank is lighter in the hand, so you notice the difference after hours on the water. And every component is a step up. Same versatile 9' 5wt footprint; more rod underneath it.
If you already know how to cast and you want the best version of the one-rod-does-it-all setup, this is it. It's the premium all-arounder — the rod a lot of anglers settle on and never feel the need to replace.
Same length, same line weight, different feel. The standard Fly Flinger has a forgiving medium-fast action that's easier to learn on, and it's our most accessible price — the rod we point new anglers to. The Pro has a faster action, a lighter and more refined blank, and upgraded hardware throughout. It rewards a developed casting stroke with more speed, distance, and wind performance. Should I get the Pro or the standard Fly Flinger?
If you're newer to casting or want our most accessible price, start with the Fly Flinger — it's more forgiving and easier to learn on. If your casting is dialed in and you want more line speed, distance, and wind performance, the Pro is the upgrade. Same size and range; higher performance.
Is a fast action harder to cast?
It's less forgiving of a rushed or sloppy stroke, which is why we point beginners to the standard Fly Flinger. But if your timing is solid, a fast action gives you more speed, more accuracy, and better performance in wind — it rewards good casting.
I want even more power for big flies and wind — is this the rod?
The Pro handles wind and everyday trico-to-streamer range beautifully. But if you're regularly throwing big streamers, heavy nymph rigs, or fishing bigger water and fish, step up to the Bug Bomber (9' 6wt) — that's the muscle rod.

The Riser

Eight and a half feet, 4-weight, medium action. The Riser is the rod you reach for when the fishing gets delicate — soft presentations, spooky fish, and dry flies laid down so gently they never see it coming.
Not every day on the water is a do-everything day. Some days the fish are up, sipping off the surface, and heavier gear just slaps the water and sends them running. That's what the Riser is for. The shorter 8.5' length gives you accuracy and control in tight quarters. The 4-weight lays down light lines and small flies with a whisper. And the medium action loads deep and protects fine tippet, so you can fish delicate and still land the fish.
If dry-fly fishing is your favorite kind of day — small water, rising fish, careful presentations — this is your rod. It's the most specialized, most rewarding rod in the lineup, and it does its one job beautifully.
A lighter line weight means a softer delivery — the fly lands first, gently, instead of the line crashing down and spooking a wary fish. The shorter length trades a little reach for a lot of accuracy and easy handling on small streams and brushy banks. Together they make a rod that does one thing better than any all-arounder can: put a dry fly exactly where you want it, softly enough that the fish never knows you're there. Is the Riser a good first rod?
It can be, if you already know dry-fly fishing is what you love. But if you want one rod to learn on and do a bit of everything, the Fly Flinger (9' 5wt) is the more versatile place to start. The Riser is a specialist — it rewards anglers who want a dedicated dry-fly rod.
Can it fish nymphs or streamers?
It can handle a light nymph rig in a pinch, but that's not what it's built for. A 4-weight shines with dry flies and light presentations. For heavier rigs and bigger flies, look at the Fly Flinger Pro or Bug Bomber.
Why 8.5 feet instead of 9?
The shorter length gives you more accuracy and easier handling on small streams and tight, brushy water — exactly where delicate dry-fly fishing happens. You trade a little distance for a lot of control.

Is a 6-weight too much rod for trout?
Not for the way a lot of people fish. If you throw streamers, heavy nymph rigs, or big hoppers, fish bigger water, or deal with a lot of wind, the extra power of a 6-weight is a real advantage. If most of your fishing is smaller flies and delicate presentations, the Fly Flinger Pro (9' 5wt) or Riser (8.5' 4wt) will suit you better.
What can it throw that a 5-weight can't?
Bigger and heavier — articulated streamers, weighted nymph rigs with split shot and indicators, big foam hoppers, and sink-tip lines. It also punches through wind better and has more lifting power on bigger fish.
Can you still fish dry flies on a 6-weight?
Yes. Is it as delicate as a 4- or 5-weight? No — but it fishes dries better than you'd think. It shines throwing a single hopper, and it'll handle smaller dry flies too; you just give up a little in delicacy of presentation. If dry-fly fishing is your main game, the Riser or Fly Flinger Pro is the better tool — but the Bug Bomber won't leave you stuck when the fish start looking up.
Can I use it for bass?
Absolutely. The 6-weight is a great crossover for smallmouth and other hard-pulling fish, on top of big-water trout — it has the backbone to turn over bigger bass flies and control a strong fish. (For carp and other fish that call for a 7–8 weight, you'll want something heavier — take the quiz and it'll point you the right direction.)

What's the difference between left- and right-hand retrieve?
It's which hand you reel with. Right-hand retrieve means you cast with your left hand and reel with your right; left-hand retrieve is the reverse. Most right-handed anglers cast with their right hand and reel with their left (left-hand retrieve), but it comes down to preference — pick whichever feels natural.
Is this a good setup for a beginner?
The rod and reel are a great foundation — the Fly Flinger's forgiving action is easy to learn on, and it comes pre-spooled with backing and fly line, so you're not guessing about gear. How good is the fly line?
We'll be straight with you: it's a solid mid-tier line, not a premium flagship. Think comparable to the everyday lines from the big brands rather than their top-shelf tapers. Is it the best line money can buy? No. Will it cast well and get the job done while you're learning and fishing? Absolutely. Plenty of anglers fish it happily for a long time — and you can always upgrade the line down the road without touching the rod or reel.
What else do I need to actually fish?
